Game format

  • Game duration: 60-minute time limit. Coaches keep track of time.
  • Innings change after 3 outs or 5 runs.
  • Scoring: no official score is kept during the regular season; this is an instructional league.
  • Batting order: the visiting team bats first; the home team bats last.
  • There are no umpires in Tee Ball. Coaches are trusted to make calls in line with the developmental purpose of the division.

Pitching

  • Coaches pitch from no more than 7 feet in front of the pitching rubber (about 30 feet from home plate).
  • The coach pitcher must be on a knee or seated on a bucket, and throws overhand.
  • After 3 pitches, if the ball isn’t in play, the tee is used. The pitching coach moves to the home plate area to help.
  • Coaches bring 3 balls to the mound.
  • No catchers.
  • Coaches must try to avoid contact with a batted ball and move out of the way of defensive play. If the ball hits the coach pitcher, the play is dead and runners are awarded 1 base.

Batting

  • All batters must wear a helmet.
  • All players bat. There are no strikeouts or walks.
  • If a player struggles to hit after 4–5 attempts, a coach may help by swinging with the player to get the ball in play.
  • Remove loose bats and other equipment from the field. Batting coaches should move the tee when runners are heading home.

Base running

  • A player who is out must return to the dugout.
  • Outs can be made at bases, and players should understand what it means to be out.
  • Batters and runners may advance one base on infield hits.
  • On balls hit to the outfield, players may take multiple bases but must stop once the ball is thrown back into the infield.
  • Base coaches guide runners. A runner between bases when the ball returns to the infield may advance at their own risk.
  • No advancing on overthrows.
  • If a player has the chance to hit a home run, allow it. It could be a rare and memorable moment.

Defense

  • All players play every defensive inning.
  • Only 5 players in the infield (1B, 2B, 3B, SS, pitcher); everyone else plays outfield.
  • Rotate players so everyone gets a chance in the infield, based on ability. Safety first: avoid putting players at pitcher or first base if they can’t protect themselves.
  • Rotate the pitcher position every inning.
  • Outfielders must stay 15 feet back from the base paths and should throw to infielders rather than running to tag bases or runners.
  • Encourage players to throw to make outs rather than tagging runners. Pitchers should field and throw to first whenever possible.
  • A pitcher who fields the ball and runs home for a force out with the bases loaded is allowed, but the focus is learning to throw and catch.

Coaches & dugout

  • Dugouts: home team on the 1st-base line; visitors on the 3rd-base line.
  • Warm up in the outfield only, not the infield.
  • Coaches may instruct players but may not touch the ball in play. If a coach touches the ball, the play is dead.
  • All volunteers on the field must have a league background check.
  • A team parent or helper organizes snacks and drinks for each game. Be mindful of food allergies.

Equipment & field

  • Balls: the league provides 12 game balls and some practice balls. Coaches are encouraged to award a game ball to a player after each game.
  • Batting tee: a tee is available at Crackerjack and Bubblegum, but coaches are encouraged to have their own. If needed, get it from the storage shed (shipping container) before each game and bring a backup.
  • Uniform: the league provides jersey, belt, socks and hat. Players bring pants (color chosen by the head coach), shoes or cleats, helmet and bat.
  • After each game and practice, level and rake the batter’s boxes as needed. A rake is in the shipping containers.
  • Report any unsafe conditions to the league or your commissioner.
